Sydney-based Space Machines Company recently passed the preliminary design review for Space MAITRI – a mission to send an Australian-built orbital servicing vehicle into space using a dedicated Indian-built launcher in 2026.
The MAITRI mission is designed to support space sustainability by studying space debris for more accurate tracking, cataloguing, remote inspections, and monitoring.
This represents both a significant milestone for Space Machines Company and a significant leap forward in protecting our orbital environment.
The preliminary design review is a major step in preparing to launch a reliable mission. An independent board of experts look at whether the team is ready to progress through a more detailed phase of mission planning and technology design, leading to the critical design review and the final manufacturing of mission hardware.
This project received grant funding from the Australian Government via the Australian Space Agency.
