Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) has signed a contract with US-based AST SpaceMobile to demonstrate a space-based cellular broadband network aimed at providing connectivity in areas without terrestrial mobile coverage.

The agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in 2025 and is intended to extend network coverage from space to support connectivity for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and emergency response in remote areas, according to DSTA.

DSTA said the space-based service is intended to complement existing terrestrial infrastructure by providing an additional connectivity option to maintain communications during emergencies.

“Robust connectivity forms the backbone of effective coordination and accurate information sharing during operations. We look forward to deepening this partnership, as it opens doors to advancing connectivity solutions that could strengthen our communications network,” said DSTA Director Advanced Systems Ng Hwee Ping.

AST SpaceMobile Chief Commercial Officer and General Manager, Government Business Chris Ivory said the project would target coverage gaps and support defence and emergency services, describing the goal as an “always-on” layer of connectivity.
