The 2026 Australian of the Year is astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg, a history-making leader in Australia’s space journey. She became the first person to qualify as an astronaut under the Australian flag after graduating from Basic Astronaut Training at the European Astronaut Centre in Germany in April 2024, training alongside European Space Agency astronaut candidates and selected from tens of thousands of applicants worldwide.
