The Symposium at the 3rd Australian Space Cyber Forum will be held on June 24, 2024 at the Adelaide Convention Centre. This annual event offers an excellent opportunity to stimulate ideas, share insights on emerging technologies, and discuss industry trends. The forum aims to foster growth within the Australian space-cyber ecosystem.

Participation is encouraged for researchers, entrepreneurs, academics, educators, private consultants, public employers, and others with an interest in the space sector.

Following the welcome speeches from SA Minister for Space and Defence Stephen Mullighan; Head of the Australian Space Agency Enrico Palermo; National Cyber Security Coordinator Michelle McGuinness; and former US Ambassador to Australia Jeff Bleich, the forum intends to have three distinct panels of 90 minutes each.

The first panel, Designing Cyber Protection and Resiliency into Space Systems will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.In this session, a panel of experts will explore the evolving cyber risks that are reshaping space systems and information systems security architectures. The discussion will cover drivers for future space missions such as the rise of sovereign data centres in Australia, the use of zero trust architecture principles and new NIST requirements and controls for complex systems.

The second technical panel, Internet of Things (IoT) – Network of Things (NoT) Devices, will run from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The internet is increasingly dependent on space resources, and other space resources are relying on internet-based networks. Resources such as cars and medical equipment are active parts of internet of things devices and therefore vulnerable.

The experts could discuss the internet of space things/cubesat (IoST), a novel cyber-physical system spanning ground, air and space. IoST is envisioned as the enabling technology for a range of new transformative applications that go beyond traditional IoT.

The intent of each panel topic is to provide meaningful advice to the audience to minimise the threat posed to current and future space-cyber systems.

The annual Australian Space Cyber Forum, organised by the SpaceCyber Inc, provides an excellent opportunity for cyber security stakeholders to meet and network with key national and international players. Participation in the Space Cyber Forum is targeted at researchers, entrepreneurs, academics, teachers, private consultants, public employers, and others with an interest in the space and cyber sectors.

The event aims to stimulate the Australian space cyber ecosystem by:

  • Encouraging the exchange of information from local and international speakers;
  • Growing a local space cyber capability;
  • Showcasing Australian capabilities to national and international audiences;
  • Assisting research organisations to identify industry needs and future areas of demand, particularly within STEM pathway; and
  • Promoting commercial application of new research and technologies.
