Quasar has successfully demonstrated its multibeam X-band phased array for satellite communications and space domain awareness.

This cutting-edge system, sponsored by the Australian Defence Innovation Hub (now Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator), was delivered on budget and six months ahead of schedule. The multibeam X-band array is poised to redefine ground station performance, offering unparalleled capability for high-demand applications in global satellite communications and space operations.

The X-band phased array is a tiled modular system designed for scalability and is capable of forming terminals or larger arrays. Its features include:

  • Multibeam Capability: Supports two plus beams per tile, which can be operated individually or combined across a large array into two high-link-budget beams;
  • Low size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) design: Optimised for true mobility; and
  • Multiorbital compatibility: Operates easily across orbits ranging from below LEO to GEO.

In an important achievement, Quasar proved connectivity to a satellite in GEO orbit using just a single 30x30cm tile, showcasing the system’s exceptional efficiency for its compact size.

“This demonstration represents a major step forward for satellite communications and SDA technologies,” said Quasar CEO Phil Ridley. “Our phased array solution combines Australian cutting-edge innovation with unmatched efficiency, providing a sovereign, scalable and versatile platform for both commercial and defence applications.”
