The Australian space sector is set for a leadership transition at the Foundation level, with the organisation announcing changes to both its chair and executive team as it looks ahead to an ambitious year of activity in 2026.
After six years as Founding Chair, Michael Davis AO will retire from the role, marking the conclusion of a period credited with shaping the Foundation’s vision, structure and impact across the national space ecosystem. The Foundation said Davis’s leadership had been instrumental in establishing its direction and influence, and confirmed he will continue to support the organisation as a trusted advisor.
From January 1, 2026, the current deputy chair will assume the role of Chair, working alongside a volunteer board comprising Professor Andy Koronios, Catherine Roberts AO and Julia Dreosti.
The Foundation has also announced the promotion of Darcey Watson (pictured) to Chief Executive Officer. Watson has been a key member of the organisation since 2022 and has led a range of major initiatives, including the Australian Space Forum and the Foundation’s education programs, headlined by Kids In Space.
The Foundation said Watson’s appointment reflects her demonstrated leadership and organisational capability, as well as her role in expanding the reach and impact of its national programs.
The organisation continues to position itself as a central contributor to Australia’s space ecosystem, particularly through its role as organiser of the Australian Space Forum and its focus on education and workforce development. Over the past four years, more than 35,000 students have participated in Foundation programs, gaining access to space-related curriculum, hands-on learning opportunities, scholarships and prizes for undergraduate and graduate students.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Foundation said it has an ambitious schedule of events and initiatives planned, and will be sharing new opportunities for industry, education and community involvement as it continues to support the growth of Australia’s space sector.
