Students with a passion for space from iLAuNCH partner universities including the University of Southern Queensland, the Australian National University and the University of South Australia can now participate in internationally recognised space workforce training.

Industry-led not-for-profit AROSE has partnered with the Milo Institute a research collaborative led by Arizona State University to offer their globally renowned program to students for the first time in this region. The course offering will prepare the workforce of tomorrow and help grow the space ecosystem in Australia. iLAuNCH is supporting up to 20 students to attend the first academy in March 2024.

Executive Director of iLAuNCH Darin Lovett commented, “Providing Australian students with access to space education is a key objective in the iLAuNCH Trailblazer. By facilitating career pathways into the space industry through programs like the Milo Mission Academy we will provide students with a hands-on, deep-dive understanding of the space mission life cycle, inspiring them to be involved in the space workforce of the future.”

AROSE Program Director Michelle Keegan said she was thrilled to work with such a Space focussed Trailblazer. “It is fantastic to have the support of iLAuNCH to allow more people to access this leading-edge program. We appreciate the team at iLAuNCH for sponsoring these 20 positions and opening the door for more people to experience our very first Academy for Australia and New Zealand.”

Ms Keegan said the initiative supports the AROSE mission to grow the Australian talent pipeline for Space exploration and operations and inspire future generations to pursue careers and further study in STEM. “Importantly, graduates will be able to take the skills they acquire in the Milo Mission Academy and apply them across multiple industries throughout their careers. Students will obtain skills that make them highly productive in any business environment.”

The Milo Mission Academy for Lunar Exploration is a 12-week STEM development program that is designed to provide participants a hands-on, deep-dive understanding of the Space mission life cycle. The team-based experience allows participants to gain knowledge about the needs of the space sector, along with learning the practices, protocols, and procedures it takes to be operational within a space environment.

The program is offered virtually to make it available to as many people and regions as possible. The skills gained through this academy are foundational workforce skills that will be transferable across many Earth-based sectors as well including Energy, Resources, Defence, Communications/ Technology, and Advanced Manufacturing.

iLAuNCH sponsorship of up to 20 students was announced at the 4th Australian Space Education Mixer at the Powerhouse Museum on December 5, 2023. The mixer brings students and educators from across Australia to address a need for increased discussions, collaborations and strategies for the purpose of improving education opportunities and experiences.

The Milo Institute is a research collaborative led by Arizona State University (ASU). The Milo Mission Academy, delivered by ASU’s School of Earth and Space Exploration, provides unique, hands-on learning and insight into the dynamic world of Space. The course is delivered online and in a way that is accessible to everyone.
