Electro Optic Systems (EOS) and the Andy Thomas Space Foundation (ATSF) have announced their continued support of the Australian space ecosystem through the second iteration of the ATSF EOS Space Systems Research Awards, also known as the Jupiter Program.

The Jupiter Program was developed to inspire the next generation of Australian space scientists and engineers – and today, the 2022 award winners have been named.

Sofia McLeod of the University of Adelaide, David Smith of the University of Tasmania and Julian Guinane of the University of Sydney, were selected for their outstanding research proposals in the fields of space science and engineering. As part of their prize, each winner will receive AU$10,000.

The nominations process required applicants to submit a short research project proposal outlining their motivation and expected results, as well as the anticipated impact of their project on Australia’s growing space community. The proposals were expected to address specified areas of space technology (seen here).

The successful project proposals are as follows:

  • “Event based visual navigation for spacecraft” – Sofia McLeod
  • “Commensal Space Domain Awareness with large parabolic antennas – a research proposal” – David Smith
  • “Space object detection, tracking and cataloguing using star trackers” – Julian Guinane.

EOS and the ATSF today hosted a special online awards ceremony that brought together the award winners and current members of the Australian space industry, who shared in the celebrations.

Glen Tindall, CEO of EOS Space Systems, said, “EOS has a strong, ongoing organisational commitment to supporting the next generation of Australian STEM researchers through financial and other assistance. R&D and innovation are at the heart of what EOS does, and a high percentage of EOS Space Systems employees are educated to PhD level. The next generation of Australian space scientists and engineers will be critical to keeping EOS at the forefront of global space technologies, as well as help to build an enduring, globally competitive domestic space industry. EOS Space Systems is pleased to again partner with the ATSF and congratulates the 2022 award winners.”

Nicola Sasanelli, CEO of the ATSF, said, “The Foundation prioritises the development and engagement of students throughout all stages of education across Australia, showcasing to industry the great emerging talent across space and space-related fields. This opportunity not only enables students to become immersed in real-world industry experience but provides innovative perspectives and new ideas, alongside an insight into future workforce capabilities for our generous industry partner, EOS.”

The ATSF says it is exceptionally proud to work alongside global space industry leaders such as EOS and to offer students important, tangible experiences that will help them to kickstart their careers in the space sector.
