Electro Optic Systems (EOS) and the Andy Thomas Space Foundation (ATSF) have announced their continued support of the Australian space ecosystem through the second iteration of the ATSF EOS Space Systems Research Awards, also known as the Jupiter Program.
The Jupiter Program was developed to inspire the next generation of Australian space scientists and engineers – and today, the 2022 award winners have been named.
Sofia McLeod of the University of Adelaide, David Smith of the University of Tasmania and Julian Guinane of the University of Sydney, were selected for their outstanding research proposals in the fields of space science and engineering. As part of their prize, each winner will receive AU$10,000.
The nominations process required applicants to submit a short research project proposal outlining their motivation and expected results, as well as the anticipated impact of their project on Australia’s growing space community. The proposals were expected to address specified areas of space technology (seen here).
The successful project proposals are as follows:
- “Event based visual navigation for spacecraft” – Sofia McLeod
- “Commensal Space Domain Awareness with large parabolic antennas – a research proposal” – David Smith
- “Space object detection, tracking and cataloguing using star trackers” – Julian Guinane.
EOS and the ATSF today hosted a special online awards ceremony that brought together the award winners and current members of the Australian space industry, who shared in the celebrations.
